Lottery gas prize

It seems gasoline is entering all aspects of our lives…and in the “sales gimmick” incentive area the promotional ideas keep “rolling” along. Here’s the latest-With gas prices making a beeline for the $5-a-gallon mark, the Florida Lottery has a solution for lucky drivers this summer: free gas for life.

Once a week for the next two months in a game called Summer Cash, the lottery will offer as second grand prize a card that will entitle the winner to gasoline for as long as they live. First prize: $250,000 in cash.

Summer Cash will run statewide through Aug. 26 with drawings on eight consecutive Wednesdays, starting July 9. Each drawing will offer up to five winners the lifetime supply of gas.

Fifty lower-prize winners each week could end up with a year’s supply of gasoline.

Tickets went on sale Monday. Juan Andres Perez, who says he spends $70 a week to gas up his Mitsubishi, was starting his week off with lunch at Caribe Cafeteria in Miami and dreaming about what could be.

”If I win the prize, I’ll come to this restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner and I will take a trip around the entire state of Florida,” said Perez, 52.

”People are very excited,” said Juan Jose Alvarado, Caribe Cafeteria owner.

At El Palmar Supermarket in Hialeah Gardens, proprietor Victor Peña reported brisk Summer Cash sales. ”It is being played by everyone from young adults to the elderly,” Peña said.

“Everyone is dreaming of winning!”

The prize will have a minimum value of $52,000, said Julio Rodriguez-Diaz, the lottery’s Miami-Dade sales manager.

Winners can opt to receive the minimum cash up front or choose 26 prepaid gas cards worth $100 each year for the rest of their lives. Winners of the one-year supply of gas will get 26 $100 cards, as well.

Cards will be accepted at BP, Chevron or Exxon Mobil stations.

Tickets will cost $5 and will be sold each week until midnight Tuesday. There is no limit on how many can be purchased.

”We are very enthusiastic about this game,” Rodriguez-Diaz said.

Summer Cash is one in a series of three-month seasonal games the lottery launched two years ago. Lottery officials estimated the game would bring in between $4.7 million and $5.8 million for education.

Dining at Caribe and fantasizing about pocketing a Summer Cash winning ticket, cabdriver Juan Castaño, 62, said he spends $350 a week on gas.

“If I win, it would be the happiest news of my life!”

A recently introduced service called MyGallons.com allows drivers to fill up their tanks sometime in the future but at current prices, using a debit-like card which banks gallons rather than dollars. “The price of gasoline was changing all the time. It seemed unpredictable,” Steven Verona, founder and owner of the Miami-based company, said on Monday. “It seemed there had to be a way to fix the price,” he said. Gas Gone Wild??

Everyone seems to be using free gas as a promotion to get new customers and to keep old ones. Well, in the “that’s amazing” department now apparently the madam at a local brothel has jumped (is that the right word?) <g> on the bandwagon…

Yesterday, an interesting new site was launched called MyGallons.com. As just reported this morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America”, the site is a new membership site that provides bulk discounts on gas. Since yesterday, several thousand people have already joined.

Telecommuting to save gas

As gas prices rise, so does an interest in telecommuting. In fact, today on the way in to work I listened to a story about how the Federal Government was going to give employees an incentive to work from home. I heard the story quickly and didn’t get all the details. Does anyone else know about this story?

Just imagine how much money we would save if more people worked from home! Of course, I don’t know what that would do for family life. I worked from home for many years but as my older son became a teenager it was hard to keep him out of my designated office. Working from home has its pluses and minuses, but in terms of helping out the wallet there could be a big savings for you! The big question is how willing would employers be to have their folks work from home? Here’s a thought- what about tax incentives given to companies who let some of their employees work from home? There’s an idea! What do you think?

Limited expert support for gas tax holiday

Experts have been critical of Hillary Clinton’s and John McCain’s proposal to institute a gas tax holiday this summer. And Jonathan Alter of Newsweek piled on: “Hillary Clinton has now joined John McCain in proposing the most irresponsible policy idea of the year — an idea that actually could aid the terrorists.”- Surely, however, there must be someone out there not associated with a politician or a candidate who supported the idea of a gas tax reprieve — especially if, as Clinton suggests, it would be paid for by an excess profits tax on oil companies.

In the end, every single analyst I surveyed judged the gas tax holiday proposal to be, roughly speaking, a silly, superfluous, or outright pandering idea. “What would happen more likely than not, gas taxes would be cut, but pump prices wouldn’t go down, service stations would just continue charging what they are charging,” he said. “I’m a Libertarian and I don’t mind that. Gas Coupons? Beware!

Although many companies are now legitimately offering gas coupons and other gas related promotions to drum up more customers, not all gas coupon programs are for real. One example was in Houston, Texas where local residents were the target of a telemarketing scam that promised people over $1,200 in gas coupons that could be redeemed anywhere, but for what in exchange? They went on to sell their scam by telling the people that they could get $1,200 in gas vouchers for a fee of $3.95 and all they would have to do is provide the caller (here’s the clincher) with their bank account number.I told her I didn’t believe her,” Teresa said, when the caller asked for her personal bank account number. Assistant State Attorney General John Owen said that consumers are getting suspicious when the caller asks for their bank account number.

Companies pay “gas money” to attract customers

Lots of companies are giving away coupons for gas money to encourage more people to spend money with them. As gas prices rise and customer flow slows, this is a trend we will see more of. One example is at a theater. “We have never done this before,” said Brett Hitchcock, audience development director for the Circa ‘21 dinner playhouse. The playhouse is offering gas money for first-time cjustomers coming to see its new comedy, “Empty Nest.” “Theaters like Circa ‘21 are feeling the pinch from high gas prices. “I would rather have cash in my pocket than to have a pirce of paper and pay less,” said Circa ‘21 owner Denny Hitchcock. “it’s your reward for trying us the first time.”
